Viiu Varik
Bass
Viiu Varik was an outstanding musician and visual artist who began her tenure as principal bass with the EPO in 1982 until her death in 1997. She loved her time with the Etobicoke Philharmonic and proudly promoted its activities; whether it was encouraging participation by her many musician friends, using her teaching skills to assist other orchestra members, providing artwork for orchestra use and most of all, through her excellent leadership of the double bass section.
She embraced a wide range of musical genres; from classical and jazz to Klezmer, crossing through the Toronto Chinese Chamber Orchestra, exploring Estonian composers, playing solo concerts, working with ensembles and the EPO.
Carrying her bass on her bag she navigated the city with a suitcase sized purse in tow. Viiu was larger than life in so many ways. Her wonderful caricature drawings contained in her ‘Book of Coincidences’ were famous!
Viiu was outgoing, with a huge heart. She had a wide network of friends with diverse occupations and interests. She was immensely proud of her Estonian heritage and participated in many cultural activities to promote and remain connected to her cultural roots.
Her sudden and tragic death in a car accident was a shock to the Toronto music community. Friends set up a trust for her son Heiki and when he came of age, presented him with the funds.
With Viiu’s untimely death we lost a gifted musician, wonderful friend, dedicated mother and prolific artist.
The Viiu Varik- Principal Bass Chair, for the EPO honours this outstanding musician.
