Matisse and Aled Blundell

Trumpeters Aled and Matisse Blundell (ages 15 and 17) started playing trumpet when they were 6 and 7 respectively, and have been playing together ever since! They have held positions in the Hannaford Youth Program, Guelph Youth Symphony Orchestra, Hamilton Philharmonic Youth Orchestra, Denis Wick Canadian Wind Orchestra, Toronto Youth Wind Orchestra (touring to Los Angeles and Shanghai), and the Toronto Symphony Youth Orchestra, among others. Currently, they play together in Orchestra Toronto under the baton of Maestro Kevin Mallon.

Aled and Matisse are 4- and 5-time Kiwanis Music Festival Provincial champions, Matisse twice going on to compete Nationally. Last spring, the duo travelled to New York to play in Carnegie Hall as part of the Winner’s Recital of the American Protege’s International Competition of Romantic Music. They also had the wonderful pleasure of soloing with the Kitchener-Waterloo Chamber Orchestra under the direction of Matthew Jones. This season, they have been delighted to solo with the Oakville Chamber Orchestra, Greater Toronto Philharmonic Orchestra, Cambridge Symphony Orchestra, Milton Philharmonic Orchestra, and the Stratford Symphony Orchestra. Matisse and Aled were also very excited to solo with their younger sibling, Maslin, aged 11, as a trio with the Guelph Symphony Orchestra in December, and Symphony on the Bay in April. They look forward to soloing again as a trio with Orchestra Toronto under the baton of Kevin Mallon in June.

The siblings study with Jim Spragg of the Toronto Symphony Orchestra. Together with their sister Maslin, they make up the trumpet trio: Blundell Brass. Aled and Matisse love to play, and could not envision a life without music!!
