A native of Brazil, Maestro Rafael Luz is currently the Music Director of the North York Concert Orchestra, and also a faculty member at the Festival Eleazar de Carvalho in Brazil. Luz is a versatile conductor with experience in the operatic repertoire as well as in the symphonic. He appeared as guest conductor in several orchestras in Canada, US, and Brazil, and served as Music Director for the Jericoacoara Youth Symphony Orchestra, and as assistant conductor for the opera division at the University of Toronto, and the New Britain Symphony Orchestra in the US.
A strong believer in developing an appreciation for classical music and music-making from grass roots, Luz taught string instruments and piano to kids and adults in very poor areas of Sao Paulo, creating six string orchestras that bring classical music to the communities. He still maintains a close relationship with his country where he is seen annually teaching and conducting at the Festival Eleazar de Carvalho.
Luz earned his Masters of Arts in Conducting from the Aaron Copland School of Music in New York, and recently received his Doctor in Musical Arts degree from the University of Toronto
